In September of 2019, Olivia was born with half a heart. She has a complex congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) where the left side of her heart was underdeveloped at birth. Olivia has undergone three open heart surgeries, countless procedures, and long stays at hospitals across the country. Thanks to a tremendous team of doctors, nurses and support staff, Olivia is here with us today. She is a happy, energetic and determined little girl.
In 2022, Take it to Heart was founded with a mission to raise awareness and support children with congenital heart disease (CHD) by investing in the Herma Heart Institute (HHI) at Children's Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Olivia's parents, Dan and Meg, are deeply committed to this cause. Behind the scenes, they play a crucial role in raising funds for Take it to Heart, directing contributions into a special fund named after Olivia, where they carefully guide how the dollars are allocated at the HHI to ensure the greatest impact.
Meg is an active participant on family advisory boards at Children's Wisconsin and has the distinction of being a founding member of the HHI's first family board, the "Single Ventricle Advisory Board." This board unites parents, families, and clinicians in a collaborative effort to optimize lifetime care for individuals with HLHS. And from that inspiration, Take it to Heart adopted its tagline: Supporting Strong Hearts for Strong Futures.
Olivia's story is one of overcoming challenges and celebrating triumphs, all underpinned by prayer as a testament to the strength, faith, and resilience of the family and those who have lovingly walked this journey with them. Stay updated on her progress by joining us on CaringBridge below.
